LAS VEGAS—Capt. Mark Ware of the Sandy Springs Fire Department in Sandy Springs, Ga., and Lt. Rodney Brooks of the Henry County Fire Department in McDonough, Ga., are the winners of the National Anthem singer contest sponsored by the National Fire Protection Association.
The two will perform the national anthem in front of more than 3,000 attendees during the opening general session of the NFPA 2014 Conference & Expo, to be held here June 9-12.

QUINCY, Mass.—The National Fire Protection Association in April released an updated report on the total cost of fire in the United States, which showed that the total cost of fire in 2011 was estimated at $329 billion, or roughly 2.1 percent of U.S. gross domestic product (GDP). Adjusted for inflation, the total cost represents a 34 percent increase over 1980, while its proportion ofGDP has declined by about one-third.

QUINCY, Mass.—Derek Vigstol, of Princeton, Minn., won the title of NEC Challenge Champion in a nation-wide challenge to celebrate the National Fire Protection Association's release of the 53rd National Electrical Code.
